Mountain Foliage Fall Festival & Grand Privy Race
October 12 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Independence (VA) Town Park
Autumn hues and cool, fresh mountain air are just two of the features of the Mountain Foliage Festival, held each fall surrounding the picturesque 1908 Courthouse in Independence.
Food, music and crafts will be in abundance, featuring the handiwork and home cooking of local people.
The festival also features an event you can see nowhere else in this area – a grand privy race. The town’s Grand Privy Race is the state’s official outhouse race by the Virginia General Assembly. Teams pull custom-built outhouses – or “privies” – in a race for the prized bedpan trophy.
The festival is held at the Independence Town Park and the surrounding areas on the second Saturday of October each year.
Food vendors and favorite crafts like pottery, woodworking and jewelry will be available. The Grand Privy Race begins at 11:00 a.m.
