Located in the heart of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Carroll County offers an array of activities, scenery and deeply rooted Appalachian culture.

Most visitors take time to visit one of the nation’s busiest National Parks, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the second oldest river in the world, the New River, or the rail-trail that parallels the river, the New River Trail.  The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway runs through the center of Carroll County with a major entrance and exit point located just 2 miles from Interstate 77 in Fancy Gap, Virginia at  Parkway Milepost 199.5 in Carroll County.  The New River flows through the northwest portion of our County and contrary to its name is listed as the second oldest river in the world and uniquely flows north  The New River Trail is a 57-mile linear state park that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles, passing through Carroll County along the way. The trail’s gentle slope makes it great for visitors of all ages to hike, bike and ride horseback.

The Carroll County Historic Courthouse located in downtown Hillsville marks the site of the infamous Sidna Allen Tragedy of 1912.  This historic site now houses our local museum.  On display you will find an array of artifacts that create a story of not only the tragedy but numerous displays that highlight our local history.  Come visit in the month of April and enjoy theatrical plays that re-create the story.

Deeply situated in these beautiful mountains are bountiful treasures of talent.  Come enjoy the sound of fiddle, banjo or mandolin echoing through the hills, whispering a tune from days gone by.  The Blue Ridge Music Center, Rex Theater and Floyd Country Store are all within a short driving distance of our county seat, the Town of Hillsville (also home to one of the nation’s largest Flea Markets and Gun Show). Because we are situated along the internationally known Cultural Heritage Music Trail, “The Crooked Road,” old-time and bluegrass music can be found nearby almost any day of the week, year round.

Our rolling landscape is not only breathtaking and beautiful, but is a source of livelihood in Carroll County as the agriculture sector is vibrant and healthy. Field crop production and livestock farms provide food that is placed in supermarkets all along the east coast.  Feeding our families and yours is a huge part of what we do.  We are home to the Southwest Virginia Farmers’ Market featuring a retail venue and a wholesale distribution center.

We invite you to “PICK” Carroll County for your next get-away.  “PLAY” our way as there is a little something for everyone.  And by all means, “STAY” with us as long as you like.
